The Cundinamarca department is especially known for its capital, Bogotá, but there are other interesting places to visit! To me, these are the 4 most beautiful sites to see in this Colombian region.
1. Sumapaz National Park
This park is situated at about 2 hours from Bogotá and the ecosystem you can find here is called a páramo. It’s an intertropical mountain ecosystem that mainly has shrubs and is an important water resource. Seventy percent of all páramos are situated in Colombia, and did you know the largest one in the world is Sumapaz? You can’t miss it!
2. Chicaque National Park
If you’re interested in bird watching, this park is the best destination for you! In fact, the Chicaque nature reserve is home to over 300 species of birds, including many types of hummingbirds.
3. Zipaquirá
This city situated in the North of Bogotá is especially famous for its cathedral, in Spanish ‘La Catedral de Sal’. As the name suggests, it’s a church built in salt, specifically in a salt mine at a depth of more than 200 meters. Incredible, right?
4. Guatavita lagoon
Everyone has heard of the El Dorado legend, but not everybody knows that it takes originates in this lagoon! If you’re interested in doing a cultural tour and learning about Muisca indigenous traditions, it’s the right place for you.
